Andrés García-Arias is a leading dual-qualified lawyer specializing in reinsurance and international dispute resolution, with a particular focus on the Latin American market.

Andrés is one of the few dual qualified Colombian (2011) and English (2019) lawyers in the London reinsurance market. He is based in London but is frequently in Bogotá representing London market clients. His presence in both London and Bogotá allows him to effectively serve clients on both sides of the Atlantic.

He has significant expertise handling large reinsurance market claims and has been involved in most of Colombia’s largest insurance claims in the last 10 years including, among others:

• The disputes arising from the collapse of the Colombian housing finance crisis in 1998 against the Colombian Central Bank. Including two coverage arbitrations before the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce and an ICC arbitration in London. 
• The collapse of Colombia’s largest stockbroker and investment manager, Interbolsa, which involved litigation before the civil, administrative, and criminal jurisdictions in Colombia. 
• Investigations by various regulatory bodies, including the Contraloría, into the delays and cost overruns in the construction of Reficar, the largest refinery in the Country. 
• Investigations by various regulatory bodies, including the Contraloría, into the delays and cost overruns in the construction of Bioenergy, a agricultural and bioethanol project. 
• Representing insurers in a USD 30m professional indemnity coverage arbitration before the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce related to a US dispute involving Colombia’s largest financial conglomerate.

In addition to handling complex claims and disputes, Andrés advises clients on all aspects of reinsurance coverage, including the drafting and updating of Financial Institutions/Directors & Officers (FI/D&O) policy wordings. He ensures that Colombian insureds seeking reinsurance cover in international markets have comprehensive and effective protection.

Andrés also handles international disputes involving Colombian companies with operations abroad and English companies doing business in Colombia.
