Edward Sainsbury leads Clyde & Co’s Disease team in London. He specialises in complex disease claims, insurance disputes, food hygiene claims and health and safety matters.

Edward’s cases include work-related stress and harassment claims, claims for occupational cancers and work-related upper limb disorders. Edward also specialises in claims for transmissible diseases such as COVID-19 and tuberculosis. He regularly advises both his insurer and corporate clients in relation to risk management and currently represents a number of large UK Care Service Providers. Edward regularly presents at seminars on these topics.

He is experienced in group litigation, including Hutson and ors v. Tata Steel, the British Steel Coke Oven Workers’ Litigation (“BSCOWL”) wherein hundreds of former workers at British Steel coke oven sites around the country are alleging exposure to harmful emissions leading to a variety of conditions including bladder cancer, skin cancer, COPD and chronic bronchitis (significant related Judgments include [2018] EWHC 107 (QB); [2019] EWHC 143 (QB) and [2019] EWHC 1608 (QB)).

In the ‘Cape litigation’ (CDL v CIH) Edward was involved in a multimillion-pound claim for recovery on behalf of Aviva (subsequently Swiss Re), as well representing its interests as an Interested Party in respect of the parallel Cape Product Liability action.

Edward also leads Clyde & Co’s “Emerging Risks Subject Matter Group” which considers and advises clients on, amongst other things, emerging risks within the disease sector. Edward also leads on Clyde & Co’s Care and Neglect Subject Matter Group.
