Michael's practice involves international sale of goods, carriage of goods by sea and charterparty claims, as well as debt recovery and enforcement of security work. He also has experience with in rem ship arrest proceedings and he co-authored the chapter on “Enforcement of Maritime Claims” in the textbook Maritime Law and Practice in Hong Kong (1st ed., 2015, Sweet & Maxwell). Michael has been involved with a number of high-value general commercial litigation cases, with several featuring listed companies. Additionally, he advises insurers on marine insurance coverage matters.

He has argued applications at the High Court level and in arbitration proceedings.

Michael is admitted as a Solicitor of the High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.

• Representing shipowners, charterers and cargo interests in numerous charterparty and contract of carriage disputes relating to misdelivery, inherent vice, crane damage, underperformance, overconsumption, bottom-fouling, detention, withdrawal of vessel whilst under charter, grounding, collision, general average, laytime and demurrage
• Acting in a vessel arrest arising from delays during the loading of ore cargo
• Advising H&M insurers following a tanker explosion
• Advising insurers in pleasure craft casualties
• Advising cargo insurers in a number of cargo damage, misdelivery and theft cases
• Assisting an international trading conglomerate in debt recovery work following non-payment by insolvent buyers, including claims against guarantors
• Representing a major logistics group in arbitration proceedings arising from warehousing disputes
