William (Bill) Cooney has experience handling all aspects of dispute resolution before state and federal courts, arbitration panels and fora established by international treaty.

He has acted on behalf of major insurers, financial institutions, governmental entities, international businesses, and corporate directors and shareholders. Bill has handled disputes concerning marine, political risk, and professional indemnity insurance and reinsurance coverage; massive oil spills and the release of other toxic substances; corporate mergers; construction; land use; and the sale and servicing of subprime mortgage loan pools.

  • Represented municipality in federal litigation under Telecommunications Act following its denial of application to install cellular wireless transmission facility in residential area, including negotiation and implementation of favorable settlement preventing construction of the facility in the residential neighborhood at issue.
  • Represented political risk underwriters of investment in a Chinese power plant project in eighteen day arbitration of coverage dispute resulting in unanimous award dismissing all of insured's claims against underwriters.
  • Argued and won motion for partial summary judgment before New Jersey state court in a case involving damage to an important work of modern art immediately following its shipment to the United States.
  • Represented Taiwanese technology company in complex international arbitration arising from its investment in a US company.
  • Represented US client in proceedings initiated in Mexico under North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation.
  • Represented municipality in two multi-million dollar construction litigations.
