Ian specialises in marine insurance, shipping and trade and transport litigation/dispute resolution with an emphasis on cargo recovery, marine casualty, General Average and salvage.

Ian handles marine cargo claim related cases for leading insurance companies in the UK, Europe and North East Asia, in particular in France and Japan. Ian also provides cargo claim, insurance, transportation and logistics related legal advice to one of the largest international food groups headquartered in Europe.

In 2016, on behalf of European insurer clients, Ian successfully handled what is now one of the leading English law cases on a sea carrier's limitation of liability for cargo claims. Above all, Ian adopts a highly commercial/efficient approach to all of his cases and can be relied upon to deliver the best possible result for his client at the most reasonable cost. Ian is however a skilled and experienced practitioner in London arbitration and Court cases and when called upon, he will turn those skills to his client's maximum advantage.

Experience

• Acted on behalf of successful cargo interests in the "AQASIA" Court of Appeal case
• Represented cargo interests in a contested jurisdiction battle to successfully secure a jurisdiction with a higher global limitation amount
• Acted on one of the largest containership casualities bringing claims against 150 different entities in multiple jurisdictions
• Acted on behalf of claimants in a large bulk chemical contamination claim in an ICC arbitration
• Regularly provides advice on transportation agreements and loss prevention issues to large European companies
• Acted as an expert on English marine insurance law in a US mediation relating to a claim involving the carriage of goods by rail.
