Canming has almost two decades of experience advising and assisting multi-national clients in relation to Chinese dispute resolution issues. He has represented clients before various Chinese courts, including the Higher People’s Court in various provinces and municipalities, and the Supreme People’s Court in Beijing.

In respect of arbitration, Canming has extensive experience across various arbitral centres and rules including CIETAC, SHIAC, CMAC and HKIAC. He is currently representing multi-national clients with recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards before Chinese courts.

Canming is particularly well placed in advising on a broad range of marine and trade-related matters involving bill of lading, charterparty, insurance, ship arrest and mortgage enforcement, general average and collision. He also has significant experience in advising NVOCCs, freight-forwarding and logistics companies in both contentious and non-contentious matters involving air, sea, and road transportation. His experience extends to other general commercial matters in relation to shipbuilding, terminal operation, as well as commodities and trading.

With almost 20 years of experience as a Chinese litigation lawyer, Canming has a deep and insightful understanding of Chinese laws, regulations and practices, as well as how Chinese courts work in adjudicating cases, enabling him to provide commercially practical legal advice to clients.

Canming is listed on the Legal 500 Private Practice Powerlist 2023 – Arbitration – China. He is via Westlink Partnership, qualified to practise in China. He is fluent in English and Chinese.

  • Acting for a first-class European bank in successfully arresting ships and enforcement of mortgages in Chinese courts;
  • Acting for a European commercial insurance company in a recovery matter in Chinese court;
  • Acting for foreign clients in applying for recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in Chinese courts;
  • Acting for a well-known international wholesaler's subsidiary in China in court proceedings against a Chinese supermarket operator for payments on goods;
  • Acting for a prominent Japanese insurer in court proceedings in China against a domestic company for damage caused to an aircraft during maintenance and repair performed by the latter;
  • Defending a Chinese freight forwarding company in court proceedings against claims filed by a Chinese shipper for cargo loss arising from release of cargo without original bill of lading in USA;
  • Acting for a Chinese pine nuts exporter in an arbitration in CIETAC against the buyer in England for unpaid cargo value;
  • Defending a Chinese freight forwarding company in court proceedings against claims filed by a Chinese shipper for cargo loss occurred during overland transit in the USA;
  • Acting for a South Korean shipowner in filing claims in a major Chinese shipyard's bankruptcy and restructuring proceedings in China;
  • Acting for a HK trading house in filing claims in a local textile company's bankruptcy and restructuring proceedings in Jiangsu Province, China;
  • Acting for a major international air product company in dfiling claims in a local pharmaceutical company's bankruptcy proceedings in Jiangsu Province, China;
  • Advising a major international metal trader on Chinese bankruptcy and restructuring legal issues;
  • Acting for a large commodities trader in obtaining an interlocutory mandatory injunction to compel the Hong Kong based defendant to provide security in a sum of USD 9.3 million in a dispute in relation to bills of lading and assisting to obtain final judgement against the defendant.
