Xi Ying Tay

Xi Ying is an Associate of the Marine and International Trade team in the Singapore office, and regularly advises clients on disputes arising out of charterparties, contracts of carriage, facility agreements and contracts for the sale and purchase of a wide range of commodities.

Xi Ying has represented shipowners, cargo owners, insurers and financiers on both contentious and non-contentious matters. For contentious matters, she has represented clients in various complex disputes stretching from Singapore court proceedings to arbitrations administered by institutions such as SIAC, LMAA and HKIAC. Her non-contentious experience includes drafting and reviewing sale and purchase agreements for commodities and shares of vessel-owning companies.

Xi Ying regularly volunteers with the Law Society Pro Bono Services and has represented numerous applicants of the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme. 

Xi Ying is fluent in English and Mandarin. 

Experience

• Represented shipowners in the registration and enforcement of 4 LMAA arbitration awards totalling approximately USD 36 million against a Venezuelan state-owned company.
• Represented a first class international bank in the arrest and judicial sale of a fleet of vessels in connection with the Hin Leong / Ocean Tankers insolvency. 
• Represented shipowners in the arrest of a vessel following a collision.
• Advised and represented a state-owned Chinese ship-owning entity following the unlawful conversion and detinue of their vessel by the charterers.
• Advised and represented 2 US financial institutions who were owed an estimated USD 60 million by 4 commodity trading companies, of which 3 were US registered companies and 1 was a Singapore registered company. Took on the role of lead counsel and persuaded the Singapore High Court to exercise its jurisdiction and discretion to wind up the foreign companies.
• Represented a major local logistics company in SIAC proceedings over a warehousing agreement in which the claim amount was approximately SGD 1.5 million.
• Represented a steel export company in Singapore High Court proceedings against a commodity trading company where the claim was approximately SGD 10 million.
