Calvin is a Senior Associate with extensive experience in property and energy insurance claims, supported by his previous industry experience leading the regional construction claims team at a leading global insurance broker and his dispute resolution experience in construction disputes. Calvin advises clients on complex policy coverage and quantum issues, and regularly acts for [re]insurers across Asia Pacific in negotiations, mediation, arbitration, and commercial litigation (including subrogated recoveries), providing strategic and commercially astute legal advice.

Calvin has represented high-profile parties in high-value and complex insurance claims internationally, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Middle East, and South America. Calvin has successfully led insurance claims negotiations across a range of sectors, including conventional / renewable power, upstream / midstream / downstream energy, and public / private sector construction projects. 

Calvin is a Singapore-qualified lawyer. As part of his industry experience, Calvin also holds a Certificate of General Insurance and a Diploma in General Insurance and Risk Management from the Singapore College of Insurance.

  • Represented a contractor on multiple Construction All Risk claims in Hong Kong exceeding US$10M arising from grouting leaks during construction, involving issues relating to damage, improvement, design, governmental regulations, and conflicting geotechnical expert opinions. 
  • Represented a project owner in a Delay-in-Start-Up claim in the Pacific exceeding USD$96M arising from damage to construction works due to a Nat Cat event, involving issues relating to delay scheduling, loss mitigation, and securing urgent project financing. 
  • Represented a project owner in a Delay-in-Start-Up claim in Indonesia exceeding US$35M arising from damage to machinery during construction, involving issues relating to delay scheduling, design defects, and concurrent policy extension negotiations.  
  • Represented a global contractor in a Construction Professional Indemnity claim in Mexico exceeding US$12M arising from errors in construction management, involving issues relating to design, construction management, QA processes, vicarious liability, and subrogation.

  • Represented a hydro-power plant owner in a Property Damage and Business Interruption claim in the Philippines exceeding US$26M arising from multiple weather events, involving issues relating to delay scheduling, design, Geotechnical surveys, government regulations, and multiple construction packages.
  • Represented a coal-power plant owner in a Property Damage and Business Interruption claim in the Philippines exceeding US$30M arising from catastrophic damage to machinery, involving issues relating to defects, design, and operational precautions.
  • Represented a thermal-power plant owner in a Property Damage and Business Interruption claim in Vietnam exceeding USD$5M arising from damage to a transformer, involving issues relating to design and warranty.
