Prior to joining Clyde & Co in our Melbourne office, Yuen Gi worked for an international shipping law firm in Singapore, and also worked as a Freight Demurrage & Defence (FD&D) lawyer at an IG P&I Club in Tokyo, Japan.
Yuen Gi has experience advising on and investigating maritime casualties such as collisions, groundings and fires at sea, and dealing with issues arising out of maritime casualties such as general average, limitation, salvage/wreck removal and oil pollution. Yuen Gi also handles contractual disputes arising out of charterparties, bills of lading and sales contracts.
On the non-contentious front, Yuen Gi regularly advises on sanctions compliance, for P&I Clubs, shipowners and charterers in particular.
Yuen Gi is dual-qualified in England & Wales, and Singapore. Born in Busan, Republic of Korea but raised in Singapore, Yuen Gi is fluent in both Korean and Mandarin Chinese.
Experience
- Acting for multiple vessels owned by a major shipping line in respect of a damages claim arising out of an oil pollution incident at a major container port in Malaysia
- Acting for a Russian shipowner following a collision with a bulk carrier in the Singapore Traffic Separation Scheme, which involved on-board investigations, review of VDR data and VTIS communications
- Acting for owners of a sand dredger following a collision with a tanker vessel in the Singapore Traffic Separation Scheme, which involved liaising with authorities, and dealing with bunker pollution clean-up and wreck removal
- Acting for a Korean shipowner in respect of a wreck removal at the Port of Tripoli following a grounding incident
- Acting for a major Malaysian logistics company in an arbitration under Japan Commercial Arbitration Association rules following a dispute arising under a freight forwarding contract to provide multimodal transportation services
- Acting for Korean members of an IG P&I Club in an arbitration under Singapore International Arbitration Centre rules in respect of a dispute over vessel redelivery
- Acting for a Japanese shipowner following the spill of reformate in the US
