Hickley is a Partner practising out of the Johannesburg office since February 2020. His practice is focussed on coverage advice and dispute resolution across all lines of business, with a particular focus on Construction and Engineering, Aviation, Financial Lines, and Directors and Officers Liability. Hickley regularly advises clients on matters relating to disputes in other jurisdiction, particularly throughout Africa, and on cross-border disputes. He also has a wealth of experience in personal injury claims and medico-legal matters.
His experience in civil litigation includes matters in the lower courts, the High Court, and in the Supreme Court of Appeal. He has successfully represented clients before regulatory boards and has experience in criminal matters flowing from professional services. Beyond litigation in the court system, Hickley has experience in alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including mediation and arbitration.
Hickley also has experience in the corporate and commercial field, including contractual drafting and negotiation, advice on corporate governance and general legal issues, as well dispute resolution. In these respects, he has worked with clients within the healthcare sector (including private hospitals and clinics), in the logistics industry and public sector.
Hickley regularly presents to groups on insurance generally and commercial dispute resolution.

- Advising insurers on the management of class action litigation relating to products liability.
- Advising a financial consultancy on the defence of a claim for damages flowing from the alleged failure to monitor a third party’s performance.
- Advising an insurer on a claim relating to a helicopter crash in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- Successfully defending a claim based on an alleged lack of informed consent against a general surgeon through the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal.
- Advising a healthcare start-up on the drafting and negotiation of agreements with third parties in order to limit their risk.
