Alexander is a Senior Associate in the firm’s Energy Marine and Natural Resources team in London, and has been at Clyde & Co since 2016.
He has experience conducting marine and trade disputes in a broad range of forums, including litigation in the English High Court and UK Supreme Court, and arbitration under a wide variety of different rules and institutions, including LMAA, LCIA, ICC, GAFTA, and FOSFA arbitrations.
Alexander regularly advises some of the world’s largest commodity traders, and has experience advising traders, charterers, owners and shipbuilders on a range of shipping and trading disputes, including yacht-building disputes, and cargo claims. Alexander’s practice has a particular focus on charterparty and commodity trading disputes, and his experience includes disputes in a variety of different sectors and commodities, including oil and gas, soft commodities, and metals.
Alexander was recognised for his commodities disputes work in the Legal 500 2022, where clients described him as “a pleasure to work with” and commended his ability to “efficiently digest the information and provide clarity with regards to the range of possible expect outcomes”.
Experience
- Acting for the Claimant in contempt proceedings following breach of an asset disclosure order in connection with enforcement of a High Court judgment, successfully securing a finding of contempt following a breach of a court order and successfully resisting an application to set aside that finding.
- Successfully obtaining summary judgment following default under a loan agreement in respect of a yacht.
- Obtaining an award striking out a claim alleging non-payment under a share purchase agreement for the indirect purchase of a vessel.
- Acting for a major financial institution in an LMAA arbitration over the late delivery of oil products.
- Advising a major coal trader in relation to a dispute arising out of Russian sanctions under a hedging contract.
- Advising a trader in relation to various disputes across multiple jurisdictions arising out of supply of off-specification oil products.
- Advising one of the world’s largest commodities trading houses in numerous GAFTA arbitrations, including demurrage claims and claims for breach of contract.
- Acting for the charterers of a vessel in an LMAA arbitration in a breach of charter claim arising out of the imposition of sanctions.
- Advising a group of market-leading insurers on the enforcement of a multi-million dollar SIAC arbitration award.
- Advising on applications for interim injunctions before the English High Court.
