Rory is a counsel in the English law team of Clyde & Co's Hamburg office, after joining from another international law firm in 2019.

Rory acts for shipowners, operators, managers, charterers and their insurers on a range of contentious shipping matters in London maritime arbitration and the English High Court.

On the advisory side, Rory assists clients with the drafting and negotiating of various contracts including charterparties, sale and purchase contracts, refit/repair contracts and insurance policies.

Rory also spends a lot of time advising shipping companies and their insurers on the application of European sanctions.

Rory is English-qualified and has strong industry connections in the U.K., Germany and Greece (having been based in Athens for 4 years).

Experience

Yachts & Superyachts – Advising insurers in relation to the total loss of a superyacht. Dealing with all aspects of the casualty investigation including interviewing key witnesses and preparing a casualty report.

Charterparties - Advising owners and charterers in relation to a wide range of disputes under bareboat, time and voyage charterparties including unseaworthiness, off-hire, unsafe port, deviation, bunker quality, redelivery and demurrage disputes.

Casualty, Salvage and Wreck Removal – Advising owners in relation to a complex salvage operation following the shifting of a cargo of explosives. Dealing with the subsequent general average and related issues.

Marine – Acting for disponent owners in a dispute against shippers following the loss of a cargo of wind turbines overboard.

Marine – Advising on the exercise of liens and ship arrests in multiple jurisdictions.

Marine – Working for finance providers, shipowners and corporates on general transactional shipping matters including ship finance and sale and purchase. Drafting escrow agreements, ship mortgages, account pledges, assignments and other security documentation. Liaising with ship registries and coordinating ship closings.
