NHS Resolution publishes its annual report and business plan

NHS Resolution has recently published its Annual Report and Accounts as well as its 2024/25 Business Plan.

The Annual Report sets out the year’s highlights against NHS Resolution’s four strategic priorities of Resolution, Maternity, Insights and Investing in people/systems.

As regards claims against the NHS, key statistics set out in the Report are as follows:-

  1. A record 81% of claims resolved in 2023/24 without legal proceedings being required.
  2. The number of new claims is broadly steady – rising to 13,784 in 2023/24, an increase of 273 on 2022/23 (13,511).
  3. On page 52 of the Annual Report the top four categories of clinical negligence claims reported  in each financial year are set out. In 2023/24 they were:-
    1. Emergency medicine – 1,446.
    2. Obstetrics – 1,393.
    3. Orthopaedic – 1,181.
    4. General Surgery – 640.
  4. Payments for resolving clinical claims in 2023/24 were approximately £2.82 billion compared to £2.64 billion in 2022/23.

The NHS Resolution Business Plan for 2024/25 sets out its financial and delivery plans for the third year of its previously published strategy to 2025. One of the key plans for next year is the roll out of NHS Resolution’s new case management system, CaseHub. CaseHub will make it easier to interact with NHS Resolution, increase its analytical capability and deliver efficiencies such as automation.
