Our Being a Regional MEA Employer series addresses the employment framework, legislative changes and challenges impacting employers and employees across a variety of jurisdictions. Our third episode focuses on Egypt, located in the north-eastern corner of Africa.

Egypt is seeing a continuation of structural reforms enhancing trade policies and the wider business eco system. The government is focused on enabling private sector participation with: 1) the State Ownership Policy aimed at raising private sector participation from 30 to 65 per cent within the next three years; and 2) listing 30 state-owned entities (SOEs) on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX). Foreign investment into Egypt is largely lead by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

A new employment law is currently being discussed at parliament and the law is expected to be passed in late 2023.

In this episode, Senior Associate Amy Guest invites Senior Associate, Moataz El Sherbini to discuss the dynamic employment space in Egypt and seek to answer the following questions:

  1. From an employer’s perspective what are the key things an employer needs to know?
  2. What are the opportunities for businesses? Where do you see a lot of activity taking place?
  3. Is the employment framework employer friendly or employee friendly?
  4. What’s on the horizon in the coming months?

During this episode, employers and businesses will gain an understanding of the employment framework and a market update in Egypt.

Our employment specialists assist employers with the full range of issues which arise in the workplace on a day-to-day basis. If you have any questions regarding the employment framework in Egypt, please contact Sara Khoja, Moataz El Sherbini or Elodie Chalhoub.
